INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Students may take a maximum of three interdisciplinary studies courses—one each of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 11, Open (IDC3O); Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, University Preparation (IDC4U); and Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, Open (IDC4O). GRADE 11 IDC3O – Applied Journalism (Yearbook), Grade 11, Open 1 CREDIT This course will help students combine the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Through individual and collaborative inquiry and research, students will analyse the connections among diverse subjects and disciplines; develop information literacy skills in analysing, selecting, evaluating, and communicating information; and become aware of a variety of resources and viewpoints on contemporary issues. They will also examine their own learning styles, relate their inquiries and research to real- life situations, and investigate career opportunities in new disciplines. Special Notes: This interdisciplinary course provides students with an opportunity to create informative print media for the school and community through the production of the school’s yearbook. Students investigate sources of information and compare differing perspectives on key issues, developing both a sense of news and news judgment through yearbook entries and photojournalism. They also learn editorial conventions and practices, discover principles of print and management skills and explore legal and ethical uses of information that is made public. Career options in journalism, photojournalism and print production are also explored. This course combines the expectations for Interdisciplinary Studies (Grade 11, Open) with selected expectations from Communications Technology (Grade 11, University/College Preparation), Media Arts (Grade 11, Open) and Media Studies (Grade 11, Open). Recommended preparation: ENG2D – English, Grade 10, Academic

AP Capstone Diploma Program HSB4UP (AP Seminar) and IDC4UP (AP Research) AP Capstone is a diploma program based on two AP Courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Both are year- long courses that focus on developing critical thinking, research, collaboration, analysis, evidence based arguments, writing, time management, and presentation skills. They support and further develop the skills taught in our liberal arts program. Students typically take HSB4UP (AP Seminar) in Grade 11, followed by IDC4UP (AP Research) in Grade 12. The AP Seminar course is a prerequisite for the AP Research course. In both courses, students investigate a variety of topics in multiple disciplines. Students may choose to explore topics related to other courses they’re taking. Both courses guide students through completing a research project, writing an academic paper, and making a presentation on their project. Over the course of the two-year program, students are required to: • Analyze topics through multiple lenses to construct meaning or gain understanding. • Plan and conduct a study or investigation. • Propose solutions to real-world problems. • Plan and produce communication in various forms. • Collaborate to solve a problem. • Integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections. If you earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of your choice, you’ll receive the AP Capstone Diploma. If you earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research, you’ll receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.
