Newly Requested Accommodations If a student arrives at school on the morning of her exam with a doctor’s note requesting new accommodations, her exams for that day will be rescheduled to the exam conflict day to give the school time to review the note and to apply the new accommodations in ways that are consistent with school practice. Her other exams will continue as scheduled with the new accommodations if they are deemed appropriate by the school.

Accommodations for Final Evaluations

Students will be provided with accommodations according to the following three conditions: 1. Accommodations Based on Educational Assessments: Year-round accommodations are allocated based on recommendations provided to the school through a psycho-educational assessment. A student with established year-round accommodations will meet with her Guidance Counsellor or Learning Support Specialist prior to the exam period to review her assessment accommodations. She must use the same accommodations for all of her exams. For example, this will mean that if she is: • using the Quiet Small Room for one exam, she will be there for all exams. • writing with her class for one exam, she will be there for all exams. • using a computer in the Computer Lab for one exam, she will be there for all exams. 2. New Accommodations Based on Educational Assessments: New psycho-educational assessments must be received three weeks before final exams begin if the assessment accommodations are to be implemented for that year’s exams. Assessments received after this date will be implemented in September in the following academic year, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Extenuating Circumstances All students are required to sit their respective final assessments when scheduled; however, there are exceptional circumstances that may require a student’s evaluation timetable be modified. These situations are considered on a case-by-case basis and requests should be made directly to the VP, School Life & Operations in writing. Students not able to write their final exams for medical reasons at their regularly scheduled time must submit a letter by their attending physician documenting the reason to the Vice Principal School Life & Operations. All notes from the students’ physicians are to be provided to the VP, School Life & Operations.

English Language Learners

English language learners are students whose first language is a language other than English or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the variety used for instruction in Ontario schools. All students who are admitted are expected to be proficient in English. Students in their first two years at Havergal who have been educated in a language other than English or French will be given extra time and a dictionary or electronic translator on all assessments as deemed necessary.

The Forum for Change at Havergal

The Forum for Change at Havergal supports and extends the school’s mission to prepare young women to make a difference. It provides school-wide education about the key forces shaping our world and delivers programs that enable students to explore and engage in it. Through local and international experiences, students will develop a belief in their own capability for impact and in their capability to learn, acquire new skills and adapt to new situations. These experiences range from our after- school partnerships to student-initiated partnerships that allow our students to share in the lives of young people in Toronto and abroad. Our programs seek to expose Havergal students to the perspectives and lives of others and enable them to engage in real-world problem-solving and build direct and mutual partnerships to address a shared purpose.
