Examination Conflicts An exam conflict occurs when a student has:

Evaluation Practices and Procedures Written and Performance Assessments There are two kinds of assessments at Havergal: (1) written assessments and (2) performance assessments. Written assessments are pen-and-paper evaluations. Performance assessments may involve some writing, but they also include a performance piece, for example, playing a musical instrument, performing a monologue or being asked to complete an oral assessment in French, Spanish, Mandarin or English class. Written and performance assessments are scheduled by teachers to take place during class time and can occur during any block of the school day. assessments. Exceptions may occur when a student has a function, excursion or sports match arranged by, or with the approval of, the school or when a student is seriously ill on the day of the test. It is the responsibility of the student who misses a test to contact her teacher either before the function, excursion or sports match. In the case of illness, whether or not the student has that class on the day of her return, she must arrange a time to write the test. A student who fails to do this may be penalized. In addition, a note from the parent or doctor given to the teacher, verifying the reason for the absence, is required. A skipped test may result in a mark of zero. Students who repeatedly miss tests within a course and/or across their subjects will be seen by the Vice Principal, Teaching and Learning at which time parents will be contacted. Teachers will track students who request extensions for assessments for any reason. The number of those extensions will appear on the report card as “missed assessments.” This will help parents, teachers and students reflect on the number of extensions in any course. Writing Tests and Missed Tests Students are expected to write tests on the date specified by the teacher. Advance notice will be given for all Final Evaluations Final evaluations include written and performance assessments. They are scheduled in all subjects during the last weeks of classes or during the period that follows classes during the Examination Period. The timetable for final examinations is set by the end of April. A final evaluation is a required element for all secondary school credit courses (Grade 9 to 12).

1. two or more exams scheduled at the same time; 2. more than two exams scheduled on the same day; 3. four exams scheduled on two consecutive weekdays; 4. two exams scheduled on the same day for a student who has a documented learning support and/or guidance assessment accommodation; 5. a school-sanctioned athletic tournament or provincial competition; or 6. an extenuating circumstance.

Academic Concerns

For academic concerns, students are encouraged to speak first with the teacher. Failing resolution, the Department Head and the Guidance Counsellor should be approached. In serious situations where resolutions cannot be achieved, the Vice Principal, Teaching and Learning will become involved in seeking resolution.
