SECONDARY SCHOOL COURSES IN THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM (OS 7.2) Secondary school courses in the Ontario curriculum are organized by discipline, grade and course type. Course types offered in Grades 9 and 10 (academic and applied courses, open courses) differ from those offered in Grades 11 and 12 (destination related courses, open courses). In the current Ontario curriculum, there is a clear distinction between applied and academic courses in Grades 9 and 10, as well as among the various destination courses in Grades 11 and 12. Open courses in Grades 9-12 are also distinct from other course types. Depending on the subject and/or discipline, students may earn credit for the successful completion of more than one course in the same subject at any given grade level. Courses are coded according to the Ministry of Education common course codes. The five digit code can be explained as follows:

COURSE LOAD AT HAVERGAL COLLEGE A maximum of 8 courses per year may be taken. • Grade 7-10 students must take 8 courses • Grade 11 students must take at least 6 courses Grade 12 students must complete a minimum of six university preparatory courses. These may include a combination of 4M and 4U courses. The 30 credits in the diploma may include some or all of the six required university preparatory courses. Students may not drop below the minimum course load except under exceptional circumstances and only if the school deems this to be in the best interest of the student. This decision is made in consultation with the parents, the Guidance counsellor and the Vice Principal, Teaching and Learning. TYPES OF COURSES OFFERED Grade 9 and 10 Courses (OS 7.2.1) The following types of courses are offered in Grades 9 and 10 at Havergal: • Academic courses develop students’ knowledge and skills through the study of theory and abstract problems. These courses focus on the essential concepts of a subject and explore related concepts as well. They incorporate practical applications as appropriate. • Open courses, which comprise a set of expectations that are appropriate for all students, are designed to broaden students’ knowledge and skills in subjects that reflect their interests and prepare them for active and rewarding participation in society. They are not designed with the specific requirements of university, college or the workplace in mind. Applied courses are not offered at Havergal College. Students must take a combination of academic or open courses in Grades 9 and 10. must take at least 7 courses • Grade 12 students
