INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Students may take a maximum of three interdisciplinary studies courses—one each of Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 11, Open (IDC3O); Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, University Preparation (IDC4U); and Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, Open (IDC4O).

GRADE 11 IDC3O – Applied Journalism (Yearbook), Grade 11, Open

1 CREDIT This course will help students combine the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Through individual and collaborative inquiry and research, students will analyse the connections among diverse subjects and disciplines; develop information literacy skills in analysing, selecting, evaluating, and communicating information; and become aware of a variety of resources and viewpoints on contemporary issues. They will also examine their own learning styles, relate their inquiries and research to real-life situations, and investigate career opportunities in new disciplines. Special Notes: This interdisciplinary course provides students with an opportunity to create informative print media for the school and community through the production of the school’s yearbook. Students investigate sources of information and compare differing perspectives on key issues, developing both a sense of news and news judgment through yearbook entries and photojournalism. They also learn editorial conventions and practices, learn principles of print and management skills, and explore legal and ethical uses of information that is made public. Career options in journalism, photojournalism, and print production are also explored. This course combines the expectations for Interdisciplinary Studies (Grade 11, Open) with selected expectations from Communications Technology (Grade 11, University/College Preparation), Media Arts (Grade 11, Open), and Media Studies (Grade 11, Open). Recommended preparation: ENG2D – English, Grade 10, Academic
