Family Handbook 2018-19

Importance of Outdoor Play  Students in the Junior School play outside at the following times: 8 ‑ 8:20 am; 10:40 ‑ 11 am; and  12:20 ‑ 12:50 pm. Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day at Havergal College. We  believe that there is a connection between regular physical activity, play and student growth, which  occurs on the physical, social and mental levels. Spending time outside also improves cognitive  functions.   “How does Havergal determine whether or not students remain inside during recess?”  Reasons why an indoor recess may be called, or why outdoor recess may be shortened, include:  harsh rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, extreme winds and extreme cold (‑15 degrees Celsius  without wind chill). Our expectation is that all students come to school with appropriate outdoor  gear so that they can participate fully in outdoor play. This may include a raincoat, boots, hat,  mittens, snow pants and warm jacket. If your child is too sick to go outside for recess, please keep  her home. If there is another reason why your child cannot go out for recess, but is well enough to  attend regular classes, please provide the office with a doctor’s note.   Lunch  All children are required to remain at school for lunch and eat in their classrooms. A packed lunch  can be brought from home as there is no cafeteria service in the Junior School. Please note that we  have a litterless lunch policy, and as such all lunches should be brought to school in reusable  containers with a non‑disposable cup and utensils. Non‑recyclable waste and uneaten food will be  taken home for disposal.   In order to reinforce good nutrition and ensure that children maintain a high energy level  throughout the day, candy and soft drinks are not permitted in school. A high‑energy snack such as  fruit, cheese, crackers, yogurt and granola bars may be brought from home to be eaten at recess.  Students are not to bring in any food containing peanuts or tree nuts. Kindergarten children are  provided with a snack at morning recess. Microwaves  Students in JK ‑ Grade 2 do not have access to microwave ovens to heat up their lunches and they  are encouraged to use a thermos, should they wish a warm lunch option from home. Students in  Grades 3 ‑ 6 do have access to microwaves.
