CLASS OF 1971

CLASS OF 1971 ENDOWMENT TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2019

CLASS REPS: Judy Betteridge Haust and Elizabeth White What contributes to longevity? Sometimes, just the luck of the draw! Edging towards Cinquantenaire status, it’s time we consider age as a “state of mind” and fully embrace life! On that note, Susan Manchee appreciates all the kind words and support following the unexpected deaths of her mother and her brother Richard last September. Under the “Same old, same old/No news is good news” category – and grateful for it – are Nancy Wright Bark, Lesley LeMesurier Alboini, Jane Wilson, and Kathie Pickup Hughes (announcing two more grandkids).

Hayhurst Cruess in Halifax (eight in total) and Wendy Phillips Barrett in Collingwood. Gillian (Gill) Anderson has one of her three grandkids living around the corner at BlueMountain. Gill’s mother, 91, still lives in Gill’s childhood home and plays bridge weekly in the same group as Jean Blakely Von Buttlar . Meanwhile, Louise Duder Wright regularly jets back and forth across the pond and south of the border, with three grandkids in London and three in Philadelphia. Lyn Howes Labenski is excited that her oldest son is getting married in the summer, but secretly hopes he’ll elope as she did (with Margaret (Markie) Cochran Newman at her side)! Welcome home to Debbie Morris , who’s now living in Stirling, near Belleville, after many years in Nova Scotia. For Elizabeth White and Judy Betteridge Haust , the status quo reigns with volunteer activities, some travel and three grandkids each, all living too far away! Of late, Judy volunteers with the Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada, which provides educational and group support to individuals diagnosed with this rare benign brain tumour. Speaking of longevity, here’s to some marriages that have stood the test of time: Gill Anderson and Rob celebrated an impressive 45 years last year by cruising on the Queen Mary, while Wendy Phillips Barrett and Rod and Laurie Hayhurst Cruess and Alan celebrate their 45th this year. Apologies if we’ve missed some. Remember to carpe diem !

For hobby photographer Ann Robertson , “same old” is enjoying visitors to their six bird feeders in Magnetawan with her husband. Still enjoying thriving careers are Heather Kitchen and Beth Hilton Ward . Heather is now full-time managing

director and CEO of the Calgary Opera and loving life. Beth is in Inuvik, N.W.T., where she is COO of the Beaufort-Delta Health and Social Services Authority, overseeing long- term care and eight health centres in small communities. Patricia King-Edwards keeps life interesting by teaching ESL in Ottawa and continuing with humanitarian work in India, Kenya and Nepal. “Sparking joy” for Susan Robinson Bell are four grandkids, two countries, rowing, bicycling and Eleven Centre, their guesthouse in Prince Edward County. Wendy Horne Rutherford enjoys retirement, travelling and playing with her two granddaughters. She’s looking forward to our 50th Reunion, as is Janet (Jan) Redfern Beddoe , who reports a total now of seven grandsons! Jan walked the Camino, celebrated 30 years of directing her church handbell choir and looks forward to kayaking in Haida Gwaii. Proud first-time grandmother is Margaret (Margie) Cowan Shannon in Oxford, and proud third-time step-great-grandmother is Anne Gibson ! Enjoying two grandchildren living near them are Laurie

Heather Kitchen 1971 at the Calgary Opera event in February 2019.
