Chronicle 2019

Former Staff Reunion.

Elizabeth Newton (first Head of Middle School) died on Tuesday, February 5, at the age of 95. Elizabeth was the first Head of the Middle School and taught at HC for many years.

Jean Sheppard (English) writes “I am very happily engaged in a number of writing, editing and coaching activities (jeansheppard.com) and am preparing for a life writing workshop (‘Just Start!’) I’ll be leading in June. My daughter, Emma Grace, just finished her second year at Guelph. She has her sights set on dentistry and so will be working on the dental admission test this summer in addition to running the dance camp at UCC, a job she really loves. Our family is eagerly awaiting the September launch of An Idea about My Dead Uncle, a novel by my husband, Kevin Wilson, which, to our deep delight, won the Guernica Prize last fall. And—the crabgrass is back!” It is with sadness that we heard that Eva Siatkowski (JS Teacher) died in on April 2, Easter Monday, two years after her accident.

Alistair Macrae (Social Sciences) continues to teach on a part-time basis for Ryerson University’s G.Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education and the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. His two UTSCS courses – “Film and Philosophy” and “Art that Asks Questions” – will be offered again next year. He conducted a workshop about Plato’s Lysis at the annual conference of the Ontario Philosophy Teachers’ Association.Accompanied by his wife and daughter (Emily Macrae 2009), he watched Emily’s twin brother Michael being called to the Bar in Roy Thomson Hall. Julie (Todd) McMeekin (JS Art Teacher) is “chugging away” in a beautiful warehouse space in the Industrial part of Leaside. After leaving Havergal in 2005, she founded ArteMbassy Gallery School which she has been running for the past 12 years. It is an art centre, with adult classes in fine art, art history lectures, gallery tours, art book club exhibitions etc. Vicky Morris (Phys Ed.) and husband George are delighted that son Geordie, who is a Major in the US Army, has been posted to Detroit. He is now close enough to make weekend visits with his wife and the grandchildren or for Vicky and George to go to them. Elisabeth Muir (Head of Music) plays the bells for services and weddings at St James Cathedral and volunteers at St Bart’s Anglican Church, Regent Park. About once a week she is an ‘escort’ for Mary Morton Tours most often to Stratford, Shaw, Drayton and St Jacobs. As much as arthritis allows, she enjoys playing Tennis at Toronto Lawn. Recent travels include seeing Helen Haynes in Victoria B.C, Sandy Shaw in Auckland, New Zealand, and Janet Thomas in Niagara-on- the-Lake.

Inez Somerville (English and Social Sciences) took a trip to see polar bears in Manitoba.

Kelly Stenton (Phys. Ed. and Guidance) retired from Pickering College, where she was Head of Guidance.

Larry Tayler (MS English and Drama) spent even more time in Tasmania this year. He gave a presentation/sermon at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, in Picton, in May. The title was “Grace, Gravity and Getting Old”. Janet Thomas (JS Teacher) and husband Peter are presently in Barbados for five months. Peter has retired recently and they have a new home in Niagara on the Lake. Annette Whiteley (Accountant) is making a good recovery from recent heart surgery. She hopes to regain the strength and energy she used to have by the end of the summer.
