CLASS OF 1959 BURSARY TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2018

CLASS REPS: Kathleen Bourke Bell and Christine Coutts Clement This year, we salute our world travellers. Miss Prestwich would be very impressed with our globe-trotting! Beverly (Bev) Bruce Hargraft is always on the go. Her love of flowers and figure skating, along with her sense of adventure, has taken her to seven continents. Since 1993, Bev has attended 20 World Figure Skating Championships in 11 countries. During her long association with the Garden Club of Toronto, Bev has organized eight trips to special gardens around the world. Her June trip to Wales was her final one as trip leader. When the World Association of Floral Design selected Canada to host its world flower show in 1993, Bev was on the organizing team. Since then, she has attended eight of their shows on five continents. What a beautiful way to see the world. As we write this article, Bev is off to India. Virginia Evans Walker must be close to her goal of 80 countries by 80 years. Her recent trip to northern India included a visit to Dharamshala, seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, where she met the Dalai Lama and toured the Children’s Village, which houses 2,000 orphaned and exiled Tibetan children. In Dal Lake, she spent time on “a storied houseboat” which her grandmother had also done and written about in 1930. A fall visit to San Miguel coincided with the Day of the Dead celebrations, a memorable five-day Mexican festival featured in the film Coco, which Virginia “highly recommends.” Another seasoned traveller, Patricia Hamilton Winter spent the winter cruising the western Pacific. Her trip began in Sydney and finished in Hong Kong. She spent March in Costa Rica with family and summered in the Cotswolds. Visiting family, especially grandchildren, has been the catalyst for many trips. After a wonderful rendezvous in Maui with her son and two grandsons, Alice Payne joined them in Japan for Christmas. Between West Coast visits with family, Carolyn Purden Anthony revisited England and Italy. A large, week-long family reunion on Lake of Bays was

this year’s highlight for Judy Cory Mangoff . Canada was also the focus for Tannis Clarkson , who journeyed west on the Rocky Mountaineer and hiked along Quebec’s Saguenay River. Florida remains a popular destination. Sandra Gordon Steen enjoyed spending time with her sister and escaping Toronto’s cold. Mary Jean Borden Potter visited Boca Grande several times. She also accompanied Bev on the garden tour to Wales. Wendy Langs Johnson wintered in Vero Beach and spent Christmas in California with her family. Melissa Hart DeGeer reported from Florida that she has “a new man in her life” which has somewhat limited her independence, but “life is good.” Nancy Sewell Lorimer is now a great-grandmother and Suzanne Mayberry McCollum sends you “all the best.” We were saddened to learn that Anita Krische Von Graffen ’s husband Dolfi died in November. We considered Dolfi an honorary member of our class. He attended more alumni events than most of our classmates and was loved by everyone who knew him.
