CLASS OF 1976 ~ 40th Reunion CLASS OF 1976 “STILL IN OUR HEARTS” BURSARY TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2017

The Class of 1976 celebrated their 40th Reunion last fall.

CLASS REPS: Christine Lautenschlaeger Acconcia and Kathryn (Kathy) Thom Given that many of us will be celebrating our 60th birthday this year, we wanted to understand the significance of the 60th, so we headed to today’s Encyclopedia Britannica – a.k.a. the Internet – to do some research! Apparently, it means that the planets are in the same place that they were when we were born, and it indicates that we have completed a full cycle of life, which calls for a grand celebration. How beautifully timed our reunion was, then! Laurie Stollery MacLachlan hosted our 40th Reunion in her beautiful home. It was, by all accounts, a rip-roaring success. Laurie’s epic Ludemus collection sparked many memories, and the evening was filled with storytelling and laughter. Have a look at the picture to see everyone who came. It was great to reconnect many people whom we hadn’t seen in many years. Thanks again to Laurie and her daughter Allison, who lent a hand. The 60th alsomarks a time of retirement and is the point at which people will spend more time with family, travel or start a hobby. Jeannie McLeod retired from teaching this spring after 36 years and welcomes twin grandbabies this summer. Elizabeth (Liz) Thackray Pigott spends her retirement travelling between her homes in Ottawa and Toronto, now that all of her kids have graduated and started their careers. In the travel category, Anne Maier Schattmann went to New Orleans, took a ski trip to B.C. last year and is still singing with the Treblaires Show Choir. She has added the

roles of Winnie the Pooh and Scrooge to her acting bio. Judith (Judy) Mitchell Carlton will stay for another year in Venezuela. She explored Machu Picchu in Peru last year and reports that her Spanish is improving; she feels that she has redeemed herself after getting 52% one year at HC. That got us comparing notes – she in Spanish and me in French – and a flurry of hilarious e-mails ensued. Kathryn (Kathy) Cooke Gallaher still lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she works part time in a medical clinic. Now that her two girls have moved out, she is adjusting to her husband’s recent retirement. Deborah (Debbie) Winspear Allan is off to Ireland this year to explore her Irish ancestry. Lots of you are travelling to visit grandchildren, who are clearly a highlight in everyone’s lives. Cynthia Caldwell is a triage RN in detox and wants you all to know that she’s selling her cottage in Parry Sound. Some of you squeeze hobbies into your busy lives as you juggle elder care, grandchildren and other things. Anne Warnica still plays handbells in two choirs, while Anne Maier Schattmann has taken up crocheting. She can whip up a dishcloth in a New York minute! Speaking of New York, Mary Rusz has started a ‘Primer on Architecture’ for young students and will travel to Italy this year to document classic examples of architecture. It sounds as though our lives are filled with change, but also much joy and fulfilment. We couldn’t wish for better birthday gifts than that. Until next year ladies, happy birthday!
