Boarding School Handbook 2025-26
optional leave weekends, they may stay with their Local Guardian. It is very important for you and the guardian(s) to understand the responsibilities of the guardian that you have named. Guardian responsibilities include: ● acting on behalf of parents in the event of an emergency or illness when, for example, the Health Center is closed; ● hosting your child on occasional weekends and holidays or in the event of an unexpected school closing (at the discretion of the Head of Boarding, Deputy Principal or Principal); ● making decisions pertaining to overnight invitations and co-curricular activities; and ● providing housing for said students in the event of suspension or expulsion from Boarding. In the event that a designated Local Guardian is unable to accommodate hosting their assigned Havergal Boarding student, the parent(s) must arrange alternative accommodation and transportation within 24 hours of being notified by the school. Once you have selected a Local Guardian for your child, you give standing permission to the Boarding Staff to allow your child to leave Havergal College Boarding overnight throughout the year to stay at the Local Guardian’s home address (i.e., the Boarding Staff does not need to obtain your permission each time your child goes to their guardian’s home). This includes during any school breaks and holidays when Boarding is closed and your child is staying with your Local Guardian. The Guardian Agreement form is accessible for new Boarding students on the New to Havergal page , located on the Parent Portal. Returning students will receive the form in a Back to School email sent out in August. Community Living Expectations When living in our Boarding School community, there are certain behaviours and attitudes that are constructive to the wellbeing and happiness of all Boarding students and staff. Boarding students are expected to respect and comply with the Havergal College Code of Conduct , as well as the policies created to address the issues of community life. The co-operation of each student and their family is vital to providing a supportive, functional, comfortable and healthy environment. General Expectations Boarding students are expected to: ● Leave their rooms tidy when out of Boarding. ● Keep their shared washrooms and Common Room areas clean. ● Attend meals. ● Check in and out on time. ● Be on time for school and school related commitments. ● Return items and not leave items unattended in Common Rooms. ● Sign out whenever they leave Boarding. ● Be in their rooms or the Resource Centre on time for study at 6 pm. ● Call the Boarding cell phone when unable to return to Boarding on time (due to circumstances beyond your control).
