Fire Precautions Fire doors, smoke detectors and heat sensors in rooms, corridors and fire escape routes are checked regularly by the Facilities Department. Fire drills are held frequently. Tampering with any fire equipment is a criminal offence. The burning of incense or candles in the Boarding School is strictly forbidden as is the use of any open flame, including lighters.
Section 12: Safety and Security
Staffing The five Boarding Staff, the Head of Boarding and Assistant Head of Boarding live onsite. There are always two staff available for students 24/7, except during school hours of 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, when all students are in class. In addition, the Deputy Principal and Health Center staff members are available to Boarding. Havergal Security Officers are also on site 24/7 and routinely patrol the building and grounds. Documents and Valuables Students are responsible for their belongings. Valuables should be locked away when students are out of their rooms. Student rooms have locks on the doors. They are responsible for closing and locking their doors and for keeping their keys and swipe cards in their possession at all times. Students are encouraged to sign in their passports and any important documentation with the Boarding Staff in the Boarding Office. Items are stored in individual files and kept in a lockable, fireproof file cabinet. Students may have access to these items at any time. Access to Boarding All Boarding Staff and students have swipe cards, which allow them access to the Boarding floors during specified hours. Boarding is located on the third and fourth floors of the main Upper School building. These entrances to Boarding are locked at all times and swipe card access is required throughout the day and evening based on the Boarding School’s daily schedule. Alarm System An alarm is programmed to sound if a Boarding student attempts to exit the Boarding floors outside of their designated “access hours.” A staff member will be required to use their card to deactivate the alarm between the hours of 10 pm and 8 am. There are six exit points that the students may use as exits in the event of an emergency. The fire doors are equipped with “panic hardware,” which are alarmed to ensure
